The government has ordered for the use of the state domain, Dot Bd (.bd) and Dot Bangla (.বাংলা), in websites of 30,000 primary and higher secondary educational institutions in the country.
A directive was issued in this regard last July .
The Education Ministry issued a similar directive in 2015 following which the websites were created using the Dot Edu Dot BD (.edu.bd) domain.
The Dot Bd and Dot Bangla Promotion Cell’s Central Committee of Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) recently issued letters to all district and upazila education officers with the directive to use the new websites with the Dot BD and Dot Bangla Domain names.
The letters signed by member secretary of the committee SM Alamgir were sent to the concerned education officers on Jul 10.
BTCL Domain Division Director General Shahidul Islam told Bangla Tribune that registration haD begun after the issuance of the directive.
The Dot BD domain was launched in 1999 and had as many as 47,375 domain registrations till date while the Dot Bangla domain, launched by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Dec 31, 2016, had 558 registrations till now, he said.
As many organisations did not renew registrations with the domains after 1999, data had been lost from the system and the number of registered websites seemed to have fallen, he said.
However, registrations with the websites had risen, he added.
