Hasina eluded several killing attempts

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. FILE PHOTOToday, August 21, is the day when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and president of Awami League was saved during a grenade attack in 2004. The attack came in front of the central office of the party after her speech during an anti-terrorism rally.
Leaders and workers formed a human shield and saved her.
After coming back to Bangladesh on 17 May, 1981, anti-liberation forces had made several attempts to kill her. Attempts were also made during her last tenure, 2014-2018 as PM.
AL newsletter Uttaran, says that till 2015, 19 attempts were made on her life with two attempts to sabotage the plane carrying her.
The first attack on Hasina came on 24 January, 1988, when police and BDR fired on her. As a result, 7 persons were killed and 300 wounded.
On that day, she had just come out of Patenga airport and was on her way to an anti-terrorism rally in Laldighi.
At around midnight on 11 August in 1989, a group of armed terrorists of the Freedom Party attacked the Bangabandhu Bhaban.
At that time, Sheikh Hasina was in the building. The terrorists fired for ten minutes and threw a grenade.
Sheikh Hasina was saved since the grenade did not explode.
On 11 September, 1991, she came under attack after casting her vote at a by election held at a Dhanmondi School in Dhaka. When Sheikh Hasina came out of the car, she was fired on. Other incidents include bomb attack on 23 September in Ishwardi, two firing incidents on 7 December, 1995-96 at Dhanmondi 32, bomb explosion and gun fire at AL rally at Bangabandhu Avenue, which resulted in 20 wounded.
The big attack by Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami (HuJI) was carried out in Kotalipara of Gopalganj. HuJI planted 76kg of explosives near the podium which the law enforces later discovered.
On 29 May, 2001, Sheikh Hasina, as PM, was supposed to inaugurate the construction of the Rupsha Bridge and HuJI members again tried to kill her with explosives.
Other incidents include bomb explosion at a rally in Sylhet on 25 September, 2001, a leaked e-mail which revealed a plan to kill her and her family in 1999, attacks on her convoy in 2002 in Satkhira which resulted in 12 party members getting injured.
