DNCC mayor Atiqul Islam speaks to media at Fazle Rabbi park in Dhaka's Gulshan on Tuesday (Aug 20).It is not up to the city corporation authorities to clean the spaces between two houses, says Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Atiqul Islam.

The mayor said that it was not the city corporation’s responsibility to clean up the various floors on multi‑storey buildings, their balconies and garages where Aedes mosquitoes responsible for the spread of dengue fever were breeding.

He made the remarks while inaugurating a pilot project to prevent the spread of Aedes mosquitoes at Fazle Rabbi park in Gulshan 1 area of Dhaka on Tuesday (Aug 20).

The mayor said that they were going to conduct stringent drives to comb through various areas of the capital and identify breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes, including offices of government and private organisations and under-construction buildings.

The owners of these buildings would be fined if any Aedes larvae were found during follow up drives, he added.

These drives would be conducted for two and a half hours every day and the pilot project would be executed in DNCC’s ward no 19 in the initial stage, the mayor informed.

Atiqul Islam urged the city residents to become more aware about keeping their surroundings clean and asked the city counsellors to do their part in building awareness.
