Train accidents led to 1,546 recorded casualties over the last 10 years from July 2007 to June 2017, including 365 deaths and 1,181 cases of injury, according to Bangladesh Railway.
A maximum of 246 casualties were recorded from 2014 to 2015, including 82 deaths and 164 injury cases.
Only 10 casualties were recorded from 2016 to 2017, including three killed and seven injured. And in 2014-2015, a total of 17 railway employees were killed and 94 were injured.
The highest recorded compensation paid to victims amounted to Tk5,151,000 for accidents that occurred in 2007-2008.
A total of 2,786 train accidents took place over the decade from July 2007 to June 2017. Only one incident of fire was recorded in 2016-17 in the last 10 years.

Derailments caused the maximum number of accidents. There were 44 incidents of derailments in 2016-2017, 123 in 2015-2016, 292 in 2014-2015, 158 in 2013-2014, 133 in 2012-2013, 138 in 2011-2012, 392 in 2010-2011, 403 in 2009-2010, 408 in 2008-2009, and 419 in 2007-2008.
In 2016-2017, 43.75% of the total train accidents were attributed to human errors, such as breach of rules, wrong manipulation of block instruments, and wrong setting of points, while the figure was 84.94% in 2015-16.
About 1.25% of accidents were caused by technical defects in rolling-stock, track, signalling, and interlocking apparatus in 2016-17, while 55% of accidents occurred due to other causes.
