A passenger of Charfashion-bound launch, Panama-2, told Bangla Tribune that she along with her children were travelling on the roof due to unavailability of space inside the launch.
After being questioned on the issue, the manager of the vehicle, Omar Faruq, reacted sharply, saying: “people will go home and there’s nothing we can do if they forcefully climb on the roof.”
Passengers do not pay any heed to our requests or appeals, he sounded exasperated.
Some of the launches left before the scheduled departure time, and passengers with cabin tickets missed the boat.
Tapan, a passenger of Hatia-bound launch, Tasrif-2, booked a double cabin but missed the vehicle as it left at 6am, two hours before the stated time of departure.
“We were not informed about the change in time,” Tapan sounded irate.
The ticket manager of Tasrif-2 said: “the launch was scheduled to start at 8am but, got filled soon after it reached the port and we started the journey, following an order by the executive magistrate.”
Some 110 vessels left Dhaka on Wednesday and the number could rise upto 180 on Thursday, he added.
A mobile court fined Monir Uddin, the driver of Charfashion- bound launch, Tk 10,000, for violating the Maritime Safety Law, with one month jail term, in case the fine is unpaid.
