BNP leader Jahidur Rahman who won the Thakurgaon-3 constituency in the national polls has taken the oath of Parliament.

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury administered the oath on Thursday (Apr 25) at 12 pm.

Jahidur is the only one out of the six elected BNP leaders to go against the party’s decision and take oath.

“The party does not know anything about Jahidur’s decision to take oath,” BNP media wing member, Shairul Kabir Khan told Bangla Tribune.

He added that Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has tried to contact him but failed.

Party sources said that Rahman will be show-caused and might also be ousted from the party.

As per the constitution, an elected member has to take oath within 90 days of the first meet of the parliament session, which was on 30 January, 2019.

The Dr Kamal Hossain led Jatiya Oikya Front won in eight constituencies during the national election with BNP winning six and Gano Forum two.

They had boycotted the Dec 30 polls, refusing to take oath, alleging blatant vote rigging the night before.

However, Gano Forum’s Sultan Muhammed Mansur Ahmed and Mokabbir Khan have already taken oath.

Sultan Mansur has been banished from the party while Mokabbir Khan has been show caused.

With Apr 30 being the last day to be sworn in, the rest of the BNP leaders remain steadfast in their decision to not take oath.
