Relatives of the Bangladeshis who lost their lives in the New Zealand mosque shooting are on their way to Christchurch to receive the last remains of their loved ones.
The bodies will be released to them after the New Zealand government provides at least 10 documents like death certificate, autopsy report, no infection report and others.
The wife of Zakaria Bhuiyan has already left Dhaka and is scheduled to arrive in New Zealand Thursday while Shahdat Ali Miazi, brother of Mozammel, has applied for visa and is expected to fly shortly.
Meanwhile, a family member of Omar Faruq, who was from Bandar Upazila in Narayanganj district, will also travel to New Zealand, said its Upazila Nirbahi Officer Pintu Bepari.
“I have talked Faruq’s family and requested them to send a name of a family member to the foreign ministry for their smooth travel to New Zealand and complete the formalities,” Bepari said.
An Australian named Brenton Tarrant, has been charged for killing 50 people and injuring 48 people with gun attacks on worshippers in two mosques in Christchurch on Mar 15.
Five people of Bangladesh origin died and three were injured in the attack.
“The body of Mozammel has been sent to funeral home today and we expect that Faruq’s body will be sent tomorrow (Thursday),” Deputy Chief of Bangladesh Mission in Canberra Tareq Ahmad told Bangla Tribune.
About Zakaria he said, there was a little complication about his identity as his face was distorted when the dead body was recovered.
The New Zealand police will conduct necessary test like matching fingerprint or DNA to ascertain his identity and then his body will be sent to the funeral home, he added.
The release of Dr Samad and Husne Ara Parveen’s bodies, who were New Zealand citizens, are yet to be certain, Tareq said.
Their families have decided to bury the bodies in New Zealand, he said.
“We expect that New Zealand authorities will provide the necessary documents as soon as possible,” he said.
On the compensation to the victim’s families, he said, we will provide the succession certificates of the deceased to the New Zealand authorities so that the family members get the compensation.
The New Zealand has announced that it would provide compensation for the victims.
