The death of a Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) after he was run over by a bus has sparked the road safety movement once more.

The students took position at Old Dhaka’s Raishaheb intersection since Wednesday (Mar 20) morning bringing traffic on the Dhaka-Mawa highway to a standstill.

Jagannath University (JNU) students have blocked the Dhaka-Mawa highway pressing their demands for safe roads.They took out a rally from campus after a human chain demonstration but were interrupted by the police after which they took position on the intersection.

“So far the students are carrying out peaceful protests,” said Kotoatoli police OC Mashiur Rahman.

The JNU students, meanwhile, were joined by Kazi Nazrul Islam College, Suhrawardy College and other school and college students.

Last year, two students being run over by a bus gave rise to countrywide protests with students blocking the roads and boycotting classes.
