US-Bangla crash: Compensation through lengthy legal process

Sena Kalyan Insurance said that complications are related to the proper identification of heirs and absence of essential documents.

US Bangla’s Dash-8 craft crashed in Nepal’s Tribhuban airport on Mar 12, 2018. The plane was carrying four crew members and 67 passengers. Of the 71 passengers 27 Bangladeshi, 23 Nepali and one Chinese national were killed while 9 Bangladeshis, 10 Nepalis and one Maldivian citizen were injured.

As per recommendations of the international survey body, Sena Kalyan Insurance is giving compensation to relatives of those who perished.

The amount fixed for relatives of killed passengers is $51,120 and already, 19 Bangladeshi families have received support.

Sena Kalyan Insurance has given Tk 110 million to 25 Bangladeshi families of killed and injured, leaving out the medical expenses.

The injured Nepalis have not received compensation as yet. The families of two killed passengers were given $ 51120 each.

The family of the killed pilot, Abid Sultan, has not received the money from Personal Accident Policy.

Meanwhile, the medical cost of injured passengers is being borne by insurance companies and they will get compensation after full treatment.

Kabir Hossian, who lost two legs, said, “No one can return what I lost, luckily I have two houses and now live on the rent.”

I have three children and their education was hampered due to the accident, he deplored.

MD of Sena Kalyan Insurance, Shafiq Shamim, says, “The compensation is being paid by following international laws and the court is deciding who will get the money.”

The injured Nepalis have not received compensation as their treatment is still underway, he added.

The compensation of cabin crew Sharmin Akhter Nabila could not be paid since her family could not provide adequate papers, said Shafiq Shamim, adding, “There is discrepancy in her name as the one used for employment is different from the one given in her papers.”

We will pay the compensation as soon as the verdict from the court comes, he observed.

MD od US Bangla Airlines, Kamrul Islam, said, “We are giving all out support to the families of the killed plus injured and handing out compensation in the legal process.”
