Dhaka South City Corporation has started evicting chemical warehouses from Old Dhaka’s Chawkbazar, confirmed Mayor Sayeed Khokon.
“Legal actions will be taken against those building owners who didn’t take initiatives to remove the warehouses,” he told the media on Saturday (Feb 23).
He added that the eviction drive started with removing the chemicals from Churihatta’s Wahid Mansion where the deadly Feb 20 blaze originated.
“We had taken initiative to remove the chemical warehouses at Old Dhaka a few days before the fire but the accident happened before that,” he said.
Khokon said that the drive will continue until all the warehouses are removed.
He urged the locals to report any chemical warehouses that they see in the neighbourhood and told the building owners to remove them to avoid repercussions.
