Another victim of the Chawkbazar fire has been identified as Anwar Hossain MonjuAnother victim of the deadly Chawkbazar fire has been identified on Saturday (Feb 23).

Victim Anwar Hossain Monju’s relatives identified his body, which was kept at the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital morgue, by the trouser and shirt he was wearing.

“We went to the Suhrawardy hospital’s morgue where five bodies of the Chawkbazar victims were kept. We identified Monju’s body by his shirt and trouser as the faces were beyond recognition,” said Monju’s younger brother Mainul Hossain.

On Friday, Dhaka district administration’s Senior Assistant Commissioner Abdullah Al Mansur told the media that 46 bodies had been identified and handed over to the families. 

On Wednesday (Feb 20), a deadly blaze ripped through Old Dhaka’s Chawkbazar, claiming at least 70 lives and injuring at least over 50 people.

The fire reportedly originated on the ground floor of a building housing a chemical warehouse.

It quickly spread and morphed into a full-scale conflagration after a gas cylinder in a pick-up van exploded and gutted at least five buildings.

It took 37 fire-fighting units at least 15 hours to douse the flames before the fire burnt the buildings to ashes.

The injured are being treated at different hospitals in the capital.
