Old Dhaka fire rescue efforts end

Dhaka South Mayor Sayeed Khokon speaking to the media after inspecting the fire ravaged Chawk Bazar area on Thursday (Feb 21).The rescue operations at Old Dhaka’s Chawkbazar have been called off, announced Dhaka South Mayor Sayeed Khokon.
“The rescue operations were called off at 12 pm,” Khokon said on Thursday (Feb 21).
He added that three units of fire service men will stay at the scene to monitor the situation.
“So far 70 have died and 41 have been injured. Among them, 32 have been released after being given primary treatment. Nine are admitted at Dhaka Medical College’s burn unit,” he said.
“Those damaged in the fire will be provided necessary help. The rescue operation took place under the supervision of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.”
Khokon said that the families of the victims can contact the number 029556014, Chawkbazar police station or the local City Corporation office.
On Wednesday (Feb 21), a pick-up explosion cylinder triggered a massive fire at Chawkbazar. A total of 37 units of fire service were able to bring the fire under control within four-and-half hours.
The rescuers recovered 70 dead bodies from the carnage till the rescue operation were called off.
