Old Dhaka buildings are like explosives; an accident may happen any moment, said Director (operation and maintenance) of the Fire Service and Civil Defence Shakil Newaz.
The fire department faced problems in dousing the blaze in Churihatta, he observed.
“Old Dhaka has to be restructured, otherwise, there may be bigger accidents in the future.”
Nine years ago, another fire incident in Nimtoli killed 124 persons. Fire spread since flammable chemicals were stored there.
On Feb 20 night, fire spread after a cylinder exploded in a pick-up van. Eventually, 37 units of the fire department managed to tame the flames after struggling for four and a half hours.
Till Thursday afternoon, 70 bodies were recovered.
