Verdict on writ challenging MP-oath Thursday

Supreme CourtThe verdict on the petition challenging the legality of the oath taking of the elected lawmakers in 11th National Election without dissolving the previous one will be given on Thursday (Jan 17).
The High Court bench of Justice Mainul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal gave the order on Wednesday (Jan 16).
BNP’s Joint Secretary General Mahbub Uddin Khokon who lodged the writ moved for it along with Barrister Sakib Mahmud. On the other hand, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Additional Attorney General Murad Reza moved for the state.
A notice challenging the legality of the oath-taking was given to the speaker of the parliament, Chief Election Commissioner and the cabinet secretary on Jan 8.
The notice states that as per the constitution’s clause 123 (3), new oath can be taken once the old parliament is dissolved but that was not done which is in contravention to the constitution.
A writ was lodged since no answer came on the notice.
