File photo shows Public Works Minister SM Rezaul Karim. The government has moved to demolish the risky buildings in Dhaka.
“Process to detect the city risky buildings is under way and these establishments will be demolished after detection,” Public Works Minister SM Rezaul Karim said on Monday (Jan 14).
Speaking to the media at his office after a meeting with RAJUK official, Karim said, “At first, owner of the risky buildings will be asked to destroy their properties, if they don’t do so the government will step in.”
From now on, no one will be allowed to build a house violating the building codes, warned the minister.
Elaborating the detail on the detection process, Karim said he needs some time to make a ‘radical change’.
“Nearly 8,000 lawsuits are pending with courts over demolishing these risky establishments and move has been taken for the speedy disposal of these cases,” he said.
On corruption at RAJUK, the minister urged the city dwellers to come up with the specific allegation and assured them of taking punitive measures on the matter.
