The Election Commission (EC) has written to the Bangladesh Police chief seeking the investigation report over the attack on Jatiya Oikya Front leader Dr. Kamal Hossain.
The letter by EC Joint Secretary Abul Kashem, which was forwarded to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Javed Patwary on Monday (Dec 17), asked the report to be filed within three days.
Gano Forum chief Dr Kamal’s motorcade came under attack near the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial in Mirpur on Friday (Dec 14).
At least 12 leaders and activists from the Oikya Front have been injured in the attacks, according to alliance leaders.
About seven cars, including those of Oikya Front allies ASM Abdur Rab and Jaglul Haider Afrik, were vandalised in the attacks.
The attacks came after Dr Kamal Hossain and other alliance leaders had paid tribute to the martyred intellectuals and got into their cars.
Late on Saturday (Dec 15), the paddy sheaf candidate for Dhaka-14 Abu Bakar Siddique Saju started a case with the Darus Salam Police Station.
“Twelve people have been accused in the case with several other unidentified people,” Darus Salam Police OC Md Selimuzzaman told Bangla Tribune.
Earlier the same day, Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda described the incident as unfortunate during a media call at the EC’s Agargaon offices.
“Such an attack on a senior citizen and eminent personality is not at all expected,” he said before adding that it was criminal offence and that the matter has been forwarded to the Electoral Probe Committee.
