Aritree’s class teacher arrested

BANGLA TRIBUNE/Sazzad HossainThe Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested one of the three teachers of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, who are accused of provoking the school’s ninth grader Aritree Adhikari to commit suicide.
Hasna Hena, who was the morning shift class teacher of Aritree’s section, was picked up from the capital’s Uttara area around 11.30pm on Wednesday (Dec 5), DB’s Assistant Commissioner Atiqul Islam told Bangla Tribune.
The case filed on Tuesday with Paltan police was transferred to DB for thorough investigation earlier in the evening, he added.
The two others accused in the case started by Aritree’s father Dilip Adhikary are Acting Principal Nazneen Ferdous and morning shift in-charge Zinat Akhtar of the school, located in the city’s Bailey Road.
The governing body of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College had terminated the employment of Nazneen, Hasna and Zinat following government orders after two days of widespread protests surrounding Aritree’s death which was erupted outside the school’s main campus on Dhaka’s Bailey Road since Tuesday (Dec 4) morning.

According to the case documents, the body of Aritree Adhikari was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her room locked from inside on Monday (Dec 3).
The family of the 15-year-old girl claimed she committed suicide after the principal insulted her and the parents of because she had cheated in an exam.
The principal refuted the allegation of insulting the parents and said that they were called only to inform about that Aritree was barred from an exam on Sunday (Dec 2) after she was found to be cheating by using a cell phone.
