Nothing to do over Tarique screening BNP aspirants: EC The Election Commission (EC) says it has nothing to do over BNP acting chief Tarique Rahman joining the process of screening candidates for the Dec 30 polls from London through video conferencing.
“The electoral code of conduct does not apply for Tarique Rahman since he is abroad,” its Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed told the media on Monday (Nov 19).
The ruling Awami League formally filed a complaint with the Commission on Sunday (Nov 18) calling to look into whether the law permits it.
“The Commission has discussed the matter and said the code of conduct does not apply to him since he is interviewing candidates through online from abroad. It, however, said that the there’s High Court ruling over the matter, which is mandatory for everyone to comply with,” said the EC official Ahmed.
Asked whether it means that Tarique can continue to interview BNP aspirants, he evaded a direct answer and said, “The EC says they nothing to do on it at this moment.”

The police have filed its report over the clash at Naya Paltan BNP headquarters to the Commission, the EC secretary said.

“The EC concludes it as a criminal offence, which means all proceedings, including the investigation, can continue. The Commission, however, will instruct the police to ensure that innocent people are not harassed over the incident,” he added.

The Commission has sought cooperation from all to avoid such incident in the future, Ahmed said before adding: “It has asked all concerned, including voters, candidates and law enforcers to take the matter seriously.”
