EC to seek police report on BNP headquarters clash

The Election Commission offices in Dhaka`s Agargaon. File PhotoThe Election Commission will write to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) asking a full report on the Nov 14 clash in front of BNP’s Naya Paltan headquarters in the city.
“The letter is ready, which will be sent on Sunday (Nov 18),” EC Joint Secretary Farhad Ahmed Khan told Bangla Tribune on Friday (Nov 16).
The letter contains the instruction to send a report to the EC with others shreds of evidence including still images and video footages.
It also instructed the police to avoid suing anyone, who is not directly involved with the incident, to keep a congenial atmosphere for the Dec 30 polls,
On Nov 14, BNP activists clashed with police in their first street battle with law-enforcement agencies since Bangladesh started its countdown to the election set for Dec 30.
The BNP supporters pelted the police with brickbats, set fire to two police cars and an armoured personnel carrier (APC) in the Naya Paltan area. Police used tear gas to control violence.
At least 20 law enforcers and over 50 BNP supporters were injured in the clash.
On the same day, separate delegations of Jatiya Oikya Front and Awami League met the EC and demanded its action alleging each other of carrying out the violence.
