National election deferred to Dec 30

The Election Commission says it will defer the voting in the general election by a week to Dec 30.

The deadline for filing nominations will be extended to Nov 28.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said on Monday that they decided to push back the 11th National Election considering requests made by opposition political parties.

 “We welcome their participation,” he said at an exhibition on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) at the Bangabandhu Convention Centre in Dhaka before adding that the decision was taken at a meeting earlier in the day.

The move comes four days after the CEC announced the schedule for polls in a televised address to the nation setting Dec 23 as election day.

On Nov 8, EC announced polls schedule CEC Huda announced the schedule for the general election setting Nov 19 as the deadline for the submitting the nominations, which was scheduled to be scrutinised on Nov 22. The deadline from pulling out of the race was fixed on Nov 29.

However, opposition political parties and alliances including Jatiya Oikya Front, Left Democratic Alliance have been calling for deferring the polls schedule demanding a level playing field before the voting day is picked.
