Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan told Bangla Tribune “We will be able to foresee any upcoming storms once the observatories are set up. It will help us to prevent loss of precious lives and goods as well as reduce the number of accidents that take place in the rivers.”
The project will be implemented under the Ministry of Defense and is expected to be complete by December 31, 2019.
Under the project, observatory centres and dormitory buildings will be constructed in 13 full-length river ports of the country.
Each of the observatories will be equipped with top of the line automated devices.
At the same time, networking will be established with the Dhaka Storm Station.
According to the ministry of planning, the estimated cost of implementing the project is Tk 80.5 crore.
The government will be funding the entire project by itself.
