PHOTO/PIDThe Cabinet has finalised the daft of the ‘Public Employment Act 2018’ incorporating a provision that will no longer allow the arrest of government employees for graft without prior clearance.
“Law enforcers can arrest government employees without permission after charges are pressed,” Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam said on Monday (Aug 20).
Speaking to media at his offices after a Cabinet meeting, Alam claimed that enactment of the law would not hamper the execution of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Act.
“It may somewhat delay the ACC Act,” he said.
The senior secretary said, “A government employee will be sacked if (s)he faces capital punishment or prison term for a year or more for criminal offences.”
“Civil servants will face departmental action if sentenced to jail for less than a year,” said Alam.
