Just a few months ago, Anwar Ibrahim was in a prison, but on Monday, he was sworn in as a lawmaker, marking a phenomenal return to politics, that has created history.

The parliament now has a husband, wife and daughter serving as lawmakers as Ibrahim took his oath for the seventh time as a member of the lower house, reports The Straits Times.

Ibrahim’s wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and daughter Nurul Izzah are sitting lawmakers.

This is the third time that Anwar Ibrahim made his return to Parliament in a turbulent political career that saw him jailed twice.

He was released in May following a royal pardon.

Ibrahim was accompanied by his daughter Nurul Nuha Anwar, as he went to take oath Monday morning.

The de facto leader of ruling coalition Pakatan Harapan (PH) garnered 72 per cent of the vote last Saturday in the Port Dickson by-election. The seat was vacated by a PKR lawmaker to pave for the party’s president to return to parliament in a by-election.

A former deputy prime minister, Ibrahim, is now a step closer to becoming the eighth prime minister of Malaysia.

It was the 2013 general election when Anwar Ibrahim last won a seat to become a lawmaker.

However, he lost the seat after being convicted on a sodomy charge in 2015.

Previously, Ibrahim was a  four-term MP for Permatang Pauh constituency from 1982 to 1998.

On Monday, ruling Pakatan Harapan (PH) lawmakers turned up in full force to welcome Ibrahim that included Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Home Affairs Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and other cabinet ministers.
