Nazrul Sangeet maestro Khalid Hossain was Nazrul Sangeet maestro in Kushtia on Wednesday (May 27).
The Ekushey Padak-winning artiste died at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar around 10:15pm on Wednesday. He was 78.
Khalid’s body was taken to his ancestral home at the town’s Kotparha area around 6pm on Wednesday.
Later, he was buried on the grave of his mother, Rahima Khatun, at the municipality graveyard after a namaz-e-janaza following the Esha prayers.
Khalid, who was also a teacher and a researcher, had long been suffering from cardiac problems, apart from old age complications, and developed kidney and lung ailments recently.
He was admitted to the hospital on May 4 after his condition deteriorated.
Born in Kolkata on December 4, 1940, Khalid had a six-decade spanning career, during which he worked on recording the original notations of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam's songs for five decades.
The Nazrul exponent was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 2000. He also won many other awards, including Nazrul Academy Award, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Award and Churulia Padak from West Bengal during his long career.
Six of the veteran singer’s albums were on Nazrul Sangeet, one on modern songs and 12 on Islamic songs.
He also worked as a teacher and examiner of Nazrul Sangeet at the National University, Dhaka University, Rajshahi University, Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, and all the education and textbook boards.
He was also a member of the Nazrul Notation Authentication Board at the Nazrul Institute and president of Bangladesh Nazrul Sangeet Sangstha.
