Award-winning filmmaker Amjad Hossain dies

Amjad-HossainRenowned filmmaker Amjad Hossain has passed away at the age of 76, after battling his illness for quite some time.

The National Film Award winning director and actor breathed his last at Bangkok’s Bumrungrad Hospital on Friday (Dec 14), his daughter-in-law told Bangla Tribune.

Hossain was taken to Bangkok on Nov 27, by air-ambulance after he suffered a stroke and on Nov 17.

He was in critical condition when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina reached out to his sons Sajjad Hossain Dodul and Sohel Arman and took full responsibility for his treatment. 

Born on August 14, 1942, in Jamalpur, Amjad Hossain first acted in the film “Tomar Amar (1961),” and later became a director and writer.

During his 50-year long career in the film industry, the 76-year old had dabbled in directing, producing, acting, singing and literature.

He was awarded the National Film Award for directing the films “Golapi Ekhon Traine (1978)” and “Bhat Dey (1984).”

 His other acclaimed works are- “Sundori (1979),” “Koshai (1980),” “Jonmo Theke Jolchi (1982),” “Dui Poysar Alta (1982),” “Golapi Ekhon Dhakay (2006)," and “Golapi Ekhon Bilatey (2010).”

The veteran filmmaker also received the 1992 Ekushey Padak for his lifelong contribution to the film industry.

Apart from the prestigious National Film Awards and Ekushe Padak, his works received many accolades, the most notable of which are- Agrani Bank Juvenile Literature Award, Bangla Academy Award.
