Onion is now sold at Tk 28 to Tk 30 - Tk 6 more than that of the price a week ago. With the Eid-ul-Adha to be celebrated late this month, the wholesale price of onion has increased by Tk 6 per kilogram within a week despite its import doubled.
Onion is now sold at Tk 28 to Tk 30 - Tk 6 more than that of the price a week ago.
“Sixty to 70 onion-laden trucks from India enter the Hili Land Port daily, which was 30 t0 35 a week ago,” Sohrab Hossain, public relation officer of the port, told Banlga Tribune.
A total of 365 trucks carrying 7,300 tonnes of onion entered the port between Aug 4 and Aug 9, according to the port sources.
Importers claimed that the onion-laden trucks have been arriving late due to long tailback on the India side, causing a rise in the price.
“Price of onion is likely to fall after onion import will start in a large scale following the end of the tailback,” one of the importers Bablur Rahman told Bangla Tribune.
The rise of the wholesale prices also hit the retail markets.
On spot visits, sellers were seen collecting imported-onion at the price of Tk 30 to Tk 35 – a Tk 10 more than that of price a week ago at Hili Bazar and Banglahili Bazar.
