Seven people were killed and at least seven others injured after a gas pipeline exploded near a house in Chattogram’s Patharghata.Chattogram-based Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Ltd (KGDCL) says that gas pipeline leakage was not behind Sunday's explosion at the port city's Patharghata, which left seven people dead.
“We have got no evidence that confirms that the blast occurred due to any leak in the gas pipeline,” KGDCL General Manager (Engineering Services) Sarwar Hossain told Bangla Tribune on Monday (Nov 18).
“Officials of KGDCL have investigated all day long following the explosion and submitted the findings. No furniture was burnt at the flat and the stove was undamaged, which is unusual for gas pipe explosions,” he said.
“We are suspecting that Methane gas from septic tank caused the blast,” he added.
On Sunday, an explosion near the ‘Barua Bhaban’ building at Patharghata neighbourhood left seven people dead and at least 10 others injured.
Two separate inquiries -- by the police and the district administration -- have been opened over the incident.
The probe panel of the district administration has visited the scene on Monday (Nov 18) morning.
Chattogram Fire Service Assistant Director Purna Chandra Mutsuddi, who sits on the panel, also said they found no sign of furniture burnt in the flat, where the explosion took place.
“We are still looking for clues that might point to cause of the blast,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Chattogram Metropolitan Police said that it hopes to end the inquiry within the deadline.
"We are going through CCTV footages and speaking with witnesses," said Assistant Commissioner Nobel Chakma.
