Hili Bus Terminal, FILE PHOTOBus drivers have halted public transportation at Hili-Bogura route for indefinite period demanding the reformation of Road Transportation Act 2018.
Drivers have withdrawn their services since Saturday (Nov 16) after parking their vehicles at Hili bus terminal.
Passengers are suffering from the sudden halt and paying escalated fare to vans, rickshaws, three-wheelers and other vehicles.
According to the bus drivers, abundant vans, rickshaws, CNG-run autorickshaws change lanes on highways all of a sudden leading to accidents. Bus drivers never hit anyone intentionally.
Speaking on recently effective law for transportation, Rezaul Islam and Imran Hossain, among other protesting drivers said, “Now the bus drivers are to pay minimum Tk500,000 as compensation to injured and face the death penalty for any fatality.”
“We refuse to be jailed for transporting people. So we shut down the services,” they added before demanding the reformation of the road transport law.
Local motor transport labour union leader Ataur Rahman Milan denied any involvement of Dinajpur Transport Workers’ Union with the ongoing transportation halt.
“Drivers stopped working on their own decision,” he said.
