Protests continue at JU for VC's resignation

Agitated students of JU protesting against the attacks on the protesters demanding the resignation of the VC of the university on Wednesday, November 13, 2019A section of students and teachers of Jahangirnagar University (JU) has continued their protest, demanding the removal of Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Farzana Islam over allegations of corruption.
As part of their pre-planned schedule, protesters started their demonstration from Murad square, adjacent to the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, around 12:30pm on Wednesday (Nov 13).
The procession, under the banner "Jahangirnagar against corruption", ended with a brief rally in the same spot, circling the old administrative building.
Vice-President of JU Central Students' Union Oliur Rahman Sun said: "There has been an attack on this peaceful and logical protest of students and teachers.
"The corrupt authorities could not mute our voice even after forcefully throwing us out from the halls.
"The VC should step down right away because of this unrest prevailing at JU, if not corruption," he added.
Students and teachers of JU protesting in the university campus on Wednesday, November 13, 2019The spokesperson and coordinator of the protest Prof Rayhan Rhyne of philosophy department said: "We have been protesting for a long time; however, there is still no sign of any investigative committee from the Ministry of Education or the University Grants Commission (UGC)."
He continued that they would remain firm against all odds and carry on their movement against corruption.
While seeking the government's attention, Professor Kamrul Ahsan from the Department of Philosophy said: "The government should immediately start an investigation in this connection, since now the protest is all about protecting JU."
