Chattogram-bound Udayan Express from Sylhet and Dhaka-bound Turna Nishita from Chattogram collided near the Mondobhag Railway Station around 3:30amThe authorities have identified as many as 16 victims who were killed in a head-on collision between two trains in Brahmanbaria early on Tuesday.
Bodies of the four victims have been handed over to the families so far while six more were kept in the temporary control room at Bayek Shikkha Sanad High School near the spot.
The deceased were Mujibul Rahman, 55, Yeasin Arafat, 12, Sujon Ahmed, 24, Jaheda Khatum, 30, Kulsum Begum, 30, Al Amin, 30, Ali Mohammad Yusuf, 32, Adiba, 2, Sohamoni, 3, Farzana, 15, Kakoli, 20, Ripon Miah, 25, Mariam, 4, Robi Horizon, 23, Farzana, 15 and Piyara Begum, 32.
Railways Ministry has said Tk 100,000 would be given to the families of the victims, who were killed in the Brahmanbaria train accident.
“Additional Tk 25,000 will be given for their burial while Tk 10,000 will be given to those who were injured in the accident,” Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan told the media after visiting the spot.
Over 50 people sustained injuries in the crash. Of them, 39 were undergoing treatment at the state-run hospital in the district town with 10 were in critical condition.
Three more have been referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital while the rest of the injured were receiving treatment at different hospitals in Brahmanbaria and Cumilla.
Earlier in the day, Chattogram-bound Udayan Express from Sylhet and Dhaka-bound Turna Nishita from Chattogram collided near the Mondobhag Railway Station around 3:30am.
According to locals, Turna Nishitha disregarded the rail traffic signal to stop at Mondobag railway station while Udayan Express shifted to the same track. Three coaches of Udayan Express were smashed leaving the causalities.
