Two ‘drug peddlers’ killed in Teknaf ‘shootout’

Police gun barrelTwo alleged drug peddlers have been killed in what the police described as a shootout at Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf upazila.
The deceased have been identified a Ziabul Hoque Zia, 30, and Azim Ullah, 46, who the police say are drug peddlers.
The incident was reported from the Hwaeikang Union’s Satgharia Para early on Thursday (Oct 17), confirmed Teknaf Model police Pradip Kumar Das.
He said that police arrested Zia, who was on the run, from Teknaf’s Hila Bazar area on Wednesday (Oct 16).
He added that based on Zia’s confession, a police team conducted a raid accompanied by him at their den at Satghira early on Thursday.
“Sensing the law enforcers’ presence the detainee’s accomplices opened fire and tried to take him away. Police fired back in self defence,” he said and added that four policemen were injured in the funfight.
The OC said that the ‘drug peddlers’ escaped and police recovered the bullet-ridden body of Zia and Azim Ullah and took them to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex.
“The emergency doctors there referred them to Cox’s Bazar Hospital for advanced treatment. The doctors declared them dead after being taken there,” he added.
He said that the deceased have been implicated in several cases under the narcotics and arms acts.
Teknaf Upazila Health Complex doctor Titu Chandra Shil said that the policemen were released after giving treatment.
OC Das said that three guns, 36 rounds of ammunition and 5,000 tablets of contraband yaba were seized from the scene.
