FILE PHOTOHeavy tide has disrupted ferry services on the Shimulia-Kathalbari route, causing nearly 350 vehicles left stranded in the jetty.
Operation of all ferries remains suspended expect ro ro and dumping ones to avoid any incident, said Nasir Uddin Chowdhury, assistant general manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA).
Heavy tide may lead ferries to collide with dredgers as dredging is under way in the channel, he said.
Only five ferries out of 13 are being operated since Monday (Oct 7), Chowdhury added.
Most of the stranded vehicles are trucks while ferries are carrying light vehicles only, said Abdul Alim, manager (commerce) of BIWTC’s Shimulia jetty.
