Voting ends amid low turnout in Rangpur-3 by-polls

Voting in the Rangpur-3 by-polls has ended amid low turnout.
The polling started at 9am on Saturday (Oct 5) and continued till 5:00pm at a stretch.
As many as 441,224 voters - 220,823 males and 220,401 females - voters were expected to exercise their franchise in the by-election.
Electronic voting machines (EVMs) were used at all 1,023 booths in the 175 polling centres of the constituency.
On spot visits, no voters were seen at many polling stations including Mahiganj, Tajhat, Lalbagh, Haridebpur, Nisbetganj, Mominpur, Nabidiganj, Pagalapir, Modern, Mulatol, Senapara, Guptapara, and Lalkuthi during the late hours of the voting.
Less number of voters' presence was also seen in the early hours. However, the turnout percentage was immediately unavailable.
Voting went peacefully with fewer voters' presence, Presiding officer of Tajhat High School polling centre Faisal Ahmed told Bangla Tribune.
A teacher of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur, Subarran Chandra Sarkar, said that voters showed less interest since the ruling party quit the polls.
As many as six candidates are contesting in the by-election, Returning Officer GM Sahatab Uddin was quoted by state news agency BSS as saying on Friday (Oct 4).
The candidates are Jatiya Party (JP)-nominated Rahgir Al Mahi Saad Ershad (plough), BNP-nominated candidate Rita Rahman (sheaf of paddy), independent candidate Hossain Mokbul Shahriar Asif (motor car), National People Party-nominated candidate Shafiul Alam (mango), Gano Front-nominated candidate Muhammad Shahidullah (fish), and Khelafat Majlish-nominated candidate Tauhidur Rahman Mandal Raju (wall clock).
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), police and Ansar members, along with executive magistrates and judicial magistrates, have been deployed to maintain law and order during the election.

The Rangpur-3 parliamentary constituency fell vacant following the death of JP founder HM Ershad on Jul 14.
