The deceased have been identified as 32-year-old Dil Mohammad and his wife 27-year-old Zaheda Begum.
“Police arrested Zaheda and Dil Mohammad with a firearm from Leda makeshift camp in Teknaf Upazila of Cox's Bazar late on Saturday (Sept 21). After primary interrogation, the law enforcers took them to the Rohingya camp around 11.45pm for recovering firearms when a group of miscreants opened fire on them. In self defence, police had to fire back which triggered a shootout,” said Teknaf police OC Pradeep Kumar Das.
“Later bullet-hit Zaheda and Dil Mohammad were found at the scene. They were rushed to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex. Later, they were referred to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where the doctor declared them dead,” he said.
“The bodies have been kept at the hospital for autopsy,” said the OC before adding, “A case has been filed with Teknaf police over the incident.”
Police claimed that three firearms, eight rounds of ammunition and 12 empty bullet shells were seized from the scene and three of their men including Assistant Sub-Inspector Nizam were injured during the incident.
Teknaf Upazila Health Complex emergency doctor Titu Chandra Shil said, police brought a woman and a man to the hospital. They suffered two bullet wounds each. The injured police members were released from the hospital after giving first aid.
