Police have arrested the prime suspect in the rape of a housewife who had been allegedly married off to him at the Pabna Sadar police station when she lodged a complaint in this connection.
The prime suspect in the case, Rasel Hossain, was arrested on Tuesday (Sept 10) and would be produced in court on Sept 11 while a rape case has been recorded, said Superintendent of Police Sheikh Rafiqul Islam.
A case was filed against five suspects – Rasel, Ghontu, Hoassain Ali, Osman and Shanju – at the Sadar station on Monday (Sept 10) night, said Officer in Charge (OC) of the station Asaduzzaman.
According to locals, the mother of three was gang-raped by her neighbour Rasel Hossain and his accomplice on Aug 29 at her own house.
Two days later on Aug 31, she was reportedly held captive at an office for three days and gang-raped by four to five men.
Locals said that when she informed her family about the matter, they admitted her to Pabna General Hospital on Sept 5.
The victim later lodged a complaint with Pabna Sadar police after which Rasel was detained.
In order to sweep things under the rug, the victim was reportedly brought to the station and married off to him. Prior to the marriage, the victim’s rickshaw-puller husband was forced to divorce her.
The victim said that the marriage took place on the orders of Pabna Sadar police OC Obaidul Hoque.
Following widespread criticism over the matter, a three-member probe committee was formed on Monday (Sept 9) to probe the incident and OC Obaidul Hoque was served a show cause notice for his involvement in the matter.
