One dead in Rangamati shooting after army patrol attacked

A member of United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) has been killed in a reported shootout with a patrol team of Bangladesh Army in Rangamati.

The incident occurred in Sajek union of Baghaichhari upazila on Friday (Aug 23).

The deceased has been identified as Suman Chakma.

According to law enforcers, being tipped off about a possible shootout, an Army petrol team conducted a drive in the area. Sensing the presence of army men, terrorists opened fire at them triggering a gunfight.

Later Army team found the body of Suman Chakma and recovered two firearms from the spot.

Confirming the matter, Sufiullah, additional superintendent police (ASP) of Rangamati, said: "Sajek police recovered the body and sent it to Khagrachari General Hospital morgue for autopsy. Army and police have also enhanced patrolling in the area following the incident."

Suman was an accused of Naniar Char UP chairman Santi Moy Chakma murder which occurred on 2017, he added.
