A man committed suicide on Monday (Aug 19) after a group of men gang-raped him, recorded the footage of the incident, demanded a ransom, and later threatened to spread the video on social media if he fails to pay.

The deceased was identified as Jamal Uddin, who was the son of late Ahad Ali from Telihati Tepirbari village of Sreepur upazila.

The rape incident took place at the Bhrindaban-Badshahnagar forest in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur, after 10 men took him to that place on Sunday (Aug 18) afternoon, said Jamal's son Hridoy.

Hridoy said: "Siyam, Sadek Mia, Rony, Pintu, Shajal, Shaon, and few others were trying to extort Tk20000 from my father for a few days. Later, on Sunday they took my father to the forest and raped him while recording the footage. Then they blackmailed him, and demanded Tk 200,000 to be paid before Monday."

On Monday (Aug 19), Jamal sent his family members to his in-law's house, and hanged himself from a beam of the balcony, Hridoy added.

Sreepur police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Nayan said: "Jamal informed his family, and locals about the incident, who suggested him to file a complaint. But he killed himself."

The body was sent to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital for autopsy, and efforts are underway to arrest the accused persons, added the OC.
