Flood situation in Brahmaputra river basin improves

REUTERSOverall flood situation in chars and Brahmaputra river basin under four upazilas in Gaibandha is improving since Thursday night as floodwater started receding from affected areas, reports BSS.
The officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said the Ghagot river of the district has been recorded a fall by 22 cm during the period and was flowing 72 cm above its danger mark at New Bridge Road point of the district town.
Assistant commissioner and acting district relief and rehabilitation officer M. Shahidul Islam said as many as 485,328 people of the district were marooned.
Some 74,104 flood victims took shelter at 180 flood shelter centres of the district, he said.
Hundreds of flood affected people took shelter on the nearby flood control embankment and flood shelters with their belongings including domestic animals and poultry birds, he added.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) M. Abdul Matin said relief distribution activity has been intensified to the flood victims of Sundargarnj, Sadar, Fulchhari and Shaghata upazilas to mitigate their sufferings.
A total of 950 tonnes of rice, Taka 14 lakh, and 6000 packets of dry food were distributed to the flood victims the DC said.
