Hours after bringing in  Ayesha Siddiqa Minni — the wife of Barguna’s slain Rifat Sharif — for questioning on Tuesday (Jul 16), police said they have formally arrested her over the Jun 26 murder in broad daylight in the southern district town.
She was arrested based on suspicion after police recorded her statement given in the Rifat murder case earlier in day, Detective Branch of the Barguna police told the media on Tuesday.
Minni is the No. 1 witness in the murder case started by Rifat’s father Dulal Sharif.
However, Rifat’s father Dulal Sharif later demanded Minni’s arrest alleging that she had a part in the murder.
A group of assailants stabbed Rifat to death in front of his wife outside the Barguna Government College on the morning of Jun 26.
A video of the attack later went viral on the internet, which sparked outrage throughout the country. Two men were seen hacking Rifat with sharp weapons as his Minni desperately tried to save him.
Later the same day, the victim’s father filed a case against 12 people, including prime suspects Nayan and Rifat Farazi. Of them, Nayan was killed in a “shootout” and Rifat Farazi was arrested later.
Police have so far arrested 13 suspects, including the six named in the case.
