Deposed military dictator and Jatiya Party chief HM Ershad will be buried in his hometown in Rangpur, said his younger brother GM Quader.

The announcement came on Tuesday (Jul 16) after his fourth funeral prayer was completed at Rangpur.

“We wanted Ershad to be buried at Rangpur from the very beginning,” Quader said and added that it was Raushan Ershad, his wife, who wanted her husband to be buried at Dhaka for various reasons.

“However, we have decided to bury him here for the people of Rangpur and my sister-in-law [Raushon Ershad] agrees,” he said.

Earlier in the day, a military helicopter carrying Ershad’s body landed at Rangpur Cantonment around 11.50 am.

His fourth funeral prayers were performed at the field of Rangpur Collectorate School and College after zuhr prayers where thousands paid tribute to the military dictator turned elected politician.

However, when the ambulance carrying his body tried to leave, the party’s Rangpur unit leaders stopped it, demanding that he be buried at his hometown.

They said that Ershad’s last wish was to be laid to rest at ‘Palli Nibash,’ his village home and that they has already dug out his grave there.

The deceased leader of opposition, who had been on life support for the last 10 days, breathed his last at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka on Sunday (Jul 14).

He had been suffering from myelodysplastic syndrome or a low-level of haemoglobin in his blood for a long time.
