Railway connection between Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet has resumed nearly one day after a Dhaka-bound intercity train from Sylhet, Upaban Express derailed and fell off a bridge at Baramchal in Moulvibazar’s Kulaura upazila late on Sunday night.
Railway authorities fixed the derailed train line and the bridge after nearly a day’s work on Monday (Jun 24), said Railway Division’s Kulaura Deputy Assistant Engineer Jewel Ahmed.
He added that a train was operated on the line on a trial basis at 6:24 pm without any problems.
Five bogies of the seven-bogie train veered off the tracks around 11:40 pm on Saturday after a culvert over the Barochhara Canal broke down, according to railway and police officials.
Two of the bogies fell into the canal and one of them overturned, while the other three bogies remained tilted.
The culvert is adjacent to Kala Miar Bazar and only 200 yards away from Baramchal Railway Station.
A four-member probe committee has been formed to investigate the accident that killed five people and injured 67.
