Confirming the matter on Monday morning, Secretary of Railway Ministry Mofazzel Hossain said: "Railway Chief Mechanical Engineer Md Mizanur Rahman will lead the probe committee."

Hoping that the rescue operation will be ended soon, he said the probe body was asked to submit the report within three working days.

"Hopefully the committee will be able to identify the cause of this fatal accident," he added.

At least five people have been killed and around 67 injured after an intercity train derailed at Baramchal.

Five bogies of Dhaka-bound Upaban Express train, coming from Sylhet, veered off the tracks around 11:40 pm on Sunday, after a culvert over the Barochhara Canal broke down, according to railway and police officials.

Following the derailment, rail communication between Sylhet and the rest of the country has been snapped.

Confirming the death toll, Moulvibazar Civil Surgeon Dr Shahjahan Kabir said: "Three of the deceased are females while the other two are males."

"Moreover, 67 passengers have been injured. Of them, 20 are in critical condition and undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital," he added.
