Madaripur Jubo League activist killed in post-polls violence

MadaripurAn activist of ruing Awami League’s youth front Jubo League was hacked to death in a surge of violence following the upazila elections in Madaripur’s Sadar upazila.
The incident occurred in the town’s Sabujbag area around 12pm on Wednesday, said the district’s Additional Superintendent of Police, Uttam Kumar Pathak.
The deceased was identified as Ershad Munshi, 23, a member of Madaripur Municipality’s Ward No 3 unit of the ruling Awami League’s youth wing, said Atahar Sardar, president of Jubo League in the district.
According to family members, the accused, Jasim Gourir, a local anti-drug activist, orchestrated the attack and is on the run.
On Tuesday (Jun 18), rebel candidate Obaidur Rahman Kalu Khan, the younger brother of former shipping minister and local MP Shahjahan Khan, was elected to the post of chairman in the Sadar upazila council polls, defeating the district Awami League General Secretary, Kajal Krishna Dey.
Ershad, the deceased, had campaigned for ‘boat’ candidate Kajal during the elections, according to his family.
He was critically injured, stabbed in the afternoon by a group of assailants in Sabujbag.
Additional Superintendent of Police, Uttam Kumar Pathak, said: “We are working to keep the troubled environment under control and to ensure that no more untoward incidents occur.”
“We will investigate i the murder and take proper action accordingly.”
