Bus services shut in six southern districtsLong-haul bus services in six districts of southern Bangladesh have been suspended since Thursday following dispute between bus owners’ associations.
Services between Barishal and the districts of Jhalakathi, Pirojpur, Patuakhali, Barguna, Bagerhat and Khulna have been stopped since 11am Thursday while later in the day, seven transport owners’ bodies announced shutting services at a media call in Bagerhat.
Mozaffar Rashidi Reza, the president of Rupsa-Bagerhat bus-minibus-coach and microbus owners' association, said at the press conference “Jhalakati bus-minibus owners’ association has been demanded irrational donations and harassed the passengers on the route. Services will remain halted until there’s a solution over the issues.”
The passengers of the route has expressed grief and sought administration’s immediate intervention to normalize the bus movement.
Kawsar Hossain Shipon, general secretary of Barisal-Patuakhali minibus association, said: “This situation was reportedly created as part of a long-time conflict between bus owners' associations of Barisal and Jhalakathi. On January 3, bus services from Barishal on Jhalakathi, Pirojpur, Bagerhat and Khulna routes were stopped and after a long time it resumed on the intervention of the local administration. But it has started again.”
