Helal Uddin BhuiyanHelal Uddin Bhuiyan, the police sergeant who uncovered the infamous 10-truck arms haul, did not die in an accident; rather he was murdered, claimed his wife Yasmin Jewel.

On Sunday (June 17), Inspector Helal was going to his workplace from his Chandina village residence in his private car which, at point, lost control and hit a tree near Feni-Rampur road. Doctors sent him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, but he died on the way.

Victim’s wife, Yesmin, alleges that after the interception of 10 trucks of illegal weapons from Chattogram port, the then government harassed him mentally and he received death threat also.

She said, “He had the accident when he was going to Chottagram one day after Eid. His enemies must have chased him or hit him from the back. He is a victim of a cold-blooded murder.”

Claiming that Helal didn’t get proper treatment at Feni Sadar Hospital, she said, “Even we didn’t get emergency service at the Dhaka Medical College. We were shocked when we found that Tk 5 ticket was more important to the doctors than giving treatment to a dying patient. ”

Yasmin said, “I met Inspector General and requested him to investigate the death of my husband. He assured me to look into it.”

Helal had been laid to rest in Cumilla in his family graveyard after a funeral at district’s Boro Gobindapur Shahi Eidgah ground in Chandina Municipality area on Monday (Jun 18) afternoon.

On April 1, 2004, Helal Uddin, then a sergeant and another sergeant, Alauddin, intercepted 10 trucks of illegal weapons from Chattogram port.

The two sergeants came under fire from the then government for apprehending the weapons; instead of being commended, they were made criminals in the arms haul case and sent to jail.

They spent 28 months in prison though, eventually, recovered their lost employment on 8 August 2011.
