Helal Uddin BhuiyanHelal Uddin Bhuiyan, the police sergeant who uncovered the infamous 10-truck arms haul, has been laid to rest in Cumilla on Monday. He was buried in his family graveyard after a funeral at district’s Boro Gobindapur Shahi Eidgah ground in Chandina Municipality area on Monday afternoon.
On Sunday (June 17), Inspector Helal was going to his workplace from his Chandina village residence in his private car which, at point, lost control and hit a tree near Feni-Rampur road.
Police recovered gravely injured Helal from the mangled vehicle and admitted him to the Feni Sadar Hospital.
Doctors then sent him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, but he died on the way.
Victim’s wife, Yesmin, alleges that her husband didn’t get proper treatment at Feni Sadar Hospital.
On April 1, 2004, Helal Uddin, then a sergeant and another sergeant, Alauddin, intercepted 10 trucks of illegal weapons from Chattogram port.
The two sergeants came under fire from the then government for apprehending the weapons; instead of being commended, they were made criminals in the arms haul case and sent to jail.
They spent 28 months in prison though, eventually, recovered their lost employment on 8 August, 2011.
