An alleged drug peddler has been killed in Cumilla's Sadar Upazila in what the police described as a shootout.
The incident was reported around 2am on Friday (May 24) from Gumti River protection dam area near to Palpara Bridge in the upazila, said police.
The deceased has been identified as 35-year-old Zakir Hossain alias Kala Zakir.
"Being tipped off, police conducted a drive to arrest Kala Zakir in the area. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, Zakir and his associates opened fire on police, forcing them to fire back which triggered the shootout," said Kotwali police OC Mohammad Abu Salam Mia.

"Zakir was caught in the line of fire and sustained bullet injuries. He was rushed to local state-run hospital where the doctor declared him dead," said Mia.

"One firearm, two rounds of ammunition and 1200 yaba tablets were seized from the spot," he said.

"Zakir was wanted in seventeen cases," added the OC.
