Rajshahi DC buys rice directly from farmers

DC SM Abdul Kader and District Food Controller Nazmul Hossain bought a total of 2.5 tons of rice at Tk 26 per kg from three farmers in Madhusudan village of Paba Upazila on Wednesday (May 22).The Rajshahi deputy commissioner (DC) visited paddy farmers in his district and purchased their unsold rice at Tk 1,040 per maund for the Directorate General of Food on Wednesday (May 22).
DC SM Abdul Kader and District Food Controller Nazmul Hossain bought a total of 2.5 tons of rice at Tk 26 per kg from three farmers in Madhusudan village of Paba upazila, said Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Jahid Newaz.
The DC also met with other famers, inquired about their woes and checked the rice.
The government will buy a total of 126 tons of rice from card holder farmers at Tk 1,040 per maund.
Jahid said: “After hearing that farmers were not getting fair price for their rice, the deputy commissioner took the decision to buy the rice alongside the district food controller.”
Local farmers Mojibor Rahman and Abdul Awal said they sold 15 maunds and 20 maunds of rice, respectively, in presence of the DC at the price fixed by the government.
“The farmers will be highly benefitted if they can sold rice at this price,” said Mojibor.
DC Kader said the administrators will always work to protect the farmers’ interest. “We will monitor the rice procurement process. Strict action will be taken if traders try to sell rice posing as farmers.”
