A local leader of ruling Awami League’s (AL) youth front Juba League has been stabbed to death in Bogura’s Sariakandi Upazila, which police, however, ruled out to be a political killing.
The AL, however, alleges activists of its arch-rival BNP were behind it.
Thirty-three-year-old Ratan Akand was died after a group of miscreants stormed into the office of the upazila’s Ramchandrapur union AL unit just on Monday (May 20) afternoon, police said.
Ratan, a farmer, was a member of the upazila’s Ramchandrapur union AL unit. He hails from Katakhali village of the union.
Ramchandrapur union AL unit General Secretary Fazlul Karim Lipu said, “Ratan had a feud with cadres of BNP and it front bodies Juba Dal and Jatiyatabadi Chattra Dal (JCD) over establishing supremacy in the area.
“Around 4:30pm, Ratan came to the union AL office to join the itfar. All of sudden, [nearby] Fulbari union BNP unit Organizing Secretary Fazlu, his two son JCD activists Sonny and Ronny, and Zahhurl, Litu, Sagor and Juba Dal activists Minhaz and Abu Bakkar stormed into the AL office.
“They then stabbed Ratan on the different part of his body including chest and fled the scene,” said Lipu, who is a cousin of Ratan.
Critically injured, Akand was rushed to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College in Bogura where doctor declared him dead.
“It was no political killing rather a consequence of previous feud,” said Sariaknadi police OC Enayetur Rahman addinglegal action would be taken once a case is filed.
Police recovered the body and sent it to the hospital morgue.
Tense prevailed in Ramchandrapur area since the killing of Ratan.
