An alleged snatcher has been killed in Chattogram in what the police described as a shootout.

The incident was reported around 11.45pm on Sunday (May 19) from the Polo Ground area, under Kotwali police station, said police.

The deceased has been identified as 42-year-old Mansur. Police claimed that, he was part of an auto rickshaw hijacking ring and accused in four cases filed at different police stations in the port city.

“Acting on a tip-off that members of a snatching gang took position beside Polo Ground, police conducted a raid in the area. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the gang members opened fire on police, forcing them to fire back which triggered the shootout,” said Kotwali police OC Kamruzzaman.

“After the shootout, police arrested Mansur with gunshot wounds from the spot and took him to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where the doctor declared him dead,” he said.

“A firearm was seized from the scene,” added the OC.
